So after a full day of hardwork, I finally rooted my HTC Wildfire (2.2). Here is an idiot-proof step by step tutorial for you. Make it YOUR phone again in less than 30 minutes.
S-OFF using AlphaRevX
1. Go to http://alpharev.nl/x/beta/ & download the windows version
2. When it asks you for the serial, enter your phone's serial number. Go to Settings > About phone & enter your serial. Copy the code given into notepad
3. Make sure you turn on USB debugging in Settings > Application > Development
4. Install the HTC Driver. Mine is in the memory card that came with the phone
5. Extract & run alpharevx.exe. Use the code given earlier. Then connect your phone. It should detect & your phone should display USB debugging mode
6. Wait for it to complete. Once it is completed, you can remove your phone.
7. To check turn off your phone. Then press volume down & power. On top it should display alpharevx & s-off
Clockwork recovery
1. This is to enable you to install a custom rom, and also for backup
2. Get the fastboot tool for windows
3. Copy the fastboot file you downloaded to the alpharevx folder you extracted earlier. Copy the folder to drive C so it is easier to run command prompt. Rename the folder to wildfire
4. Download the recovery for Wildfire. Extract & rename it to wildfire.img
5. Open command prompt. Type cd c:/wildfire & fastboot flash recovery wildfire.img
6. Download & install HBOOT driver from unrevoked. Go into bootloader (volume down & power), select fastboot. Connect your phone & it will display fasboot usb cable

7. Done. To check go to bootloader & select recovery
Rooting your phone
1. Download this file & put it in you SD card. Don't extract it
2. Go to clockword recovery & select Install From SD Card > Choose From SD Card
3. Select su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip & choose yes
3. Select su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip & choose yes
4. After completed, go back & reboot
5. You should have Super User
6. An alternative way to root is to use Gingerbreak
7. Open it using any file manager, I used Astro. Install it
8. Open the app & select root. Remember to turn on USB debugging & insert SD card
9. I waited 15 minutes, go frustrated & pressed back. It says the phone is rooted but cannot reboot.
10. After I rebooted, I have Super User
Rom manager & cyanogen mod
1. Install ROM manager from the market
2. Flash to latest recovery
3. Download rom > Cyanogenmod. Remember to install Google addons
4. Install the ROM
5. You can also manually download cyanogenmod7 & transfer the .zip into your SD card.
6. Open ROM manager & select install from SD

What I mean is, if I follow step 1 to 5 correctly then I don't need to do step 6 to 10, right?

Hi Ink Splat. Are you sure you arent using the IMEI, as i was using this by mistake when I tried, take off your battery, and you should see s/n(serial number), then type in the number next to it. HOPE THIS HELPED.

Anonymous : you dont have to install custom rom, you can root your device an then you have super user acces on your wildfire, but its not nescessary to install rom :-) sorry for the english i am from DK..........
To the others i just start it over every time i came with a failure it took my 3 hours before my device was ready, it can be hard to do.. just keep going on :-D

FINALLY !! FINALLY !! i rooted the wildfire... Followed your steps, worked like a charm mate.
Only problem i had was that after loading the custom ROM (Cyanogen 7 stable) the GPS did not work. But got it to work after Flash the current radio. http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/20578-gps-doesnt-work/

Hey I successfully switched S-OFF. When I try doing the clockwork recovery thing it gets stuck at . How do I proceed??
I have uninstalled HTC sync but left the drivers and I'm still getting stuck at during the clockwork recovery thing!!
@Tiago570 : Switch off your phone. Press the lower volume button and then the power button. You will go into the bootloader screen. Now connect your phone to the PC and then select the fastboot option and leave it as it is. Now use the dos command to type cd c:/wildfire & fastboot flash recovery wildfire.img. Hope it works!!

How long root process takes? I do every step like described with no problems, putted su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip on SD go into recovery end select "install from SD Card" and now waiting. ON my screen stands yellow arrow in circle and grey hat above the arrow at least five minutes and that is it, nothing happens. What i do now? Heeeelllp

@Alex: you misspressed the power key or something, when doing it properly that image should never appear. Try to press all the keys on the phone one by one, if you don't go back to the menu, take the baterry out and restart this step.
Remember that the trackpad and not the power button must be used to select the options!

i did it again but with a few issuse this time.
first one was i didnt delete htc sync. fail.
second was that the computer had problems with det usb driver so i needed to install them again, remember to start in HBOOT mode an then connect your phone while in hboot menu and then let the computer find the phone and then install the usb driver. so after i did that it finally worked... i hope someone can use this. or write to me at izzolol@gmail.com

Hey Joel, Nice Guide. I am glad you followed the most hassle-free procedures to get Clockworkmod, Root and other steps required to get a Custom ROM. I have seen guides which are far more complicated, and people still blindly follow that.

Re: when you get beta key copy it in notepad. I had the same prob, sometimes it is hard to read letters. in my situation it was l but I was typing I. hope this helps

I didn't even have to do the whole 'Clockwork recovery' stage as described here, since when i did the s-off stage and ran revolutionary.exe, at the end when it finished it asked me if i wanted to download clockwork recovery, to which i pressed 'Y' i.e. yes. It then pretty much did the whole 'Clockwork recovery' stage for me! I then just moved straight onto the 'Rooting your phone' stage and followed the rest and it worked perfectly. So basically you dont even need the link for the wildfire.img file.
I think some things have changed since this tutorial was made, like alpharevx.exe is now revolutionary.exe, and i think before they prob didnt offer to download clockwork recovery for you straight after which is why it is explained how to do it here.
Also just a heads up for others with a problem i had.. when i tried to run revolutionary.exe it kept opening command prompt and then immediately closing. I found out you have to uninstall HTC Sync before you can run it. So ye, apart from that it worked perfectly afterwards :)

But yeah I rooted my device twice for fisrt a week after buying and it is ma first. But still some rules.
-first check your hboot
-uninstall htc sync ( only not drivers)
-If you get stuck, google first believe ask it and put xda after and you find.
